Constructing Interactive Nomograms

Nomograms graphically encode mathematical relationships between multiple parameters. Historically, nomograms enjoyed wide use as analog computation devices, but understandably fell out of favor with the advent of more powerful calculators, computers, and related software. Yet, certain examples of nomograms encode complex relationships that are not easily visualized using more common forms such as function graphs, especially when the underlying relationship involves 4 or more parameters. Moreover, findings from cognitive science, in particular on physical imagery, suggest that the nature of interactions with such nomograms might lead users to construct qualitatively different understandings than if they had used other forms of graphs or visualizations.
